One person has died and several others have been injured after a serious multiple vehicle crash on the N2 near the Nandi Offramp, north of Durban.

The crash happened just before 9pm on Tuesday evening on the N2 northbound carriageway. Emergency teams rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a major collision involving several vehicles.

When paramedics arrived, they found a chaotic scene spread across all lanes of the busy national highway.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash. As a result, traffic movement in the area became dangerous while emergency teams worked to treat the injured and secure the scene.

Driver Dies at the Scene

Paramedics found one of the drivers trapped inside the wreckage of one of the vehicles.

The man, believed to be in his thirties, had sustained fatal injuries. Sadly, paramedics could not save him, and they declared him dead at the scene.

The eThekwini Fire Department then used the Jaws of Life to cut him free from the wreckage.

The recovery operation added to the emotional weight of the scene, as emergency crews worked in difficult conditions on a major highway at night.

For the family of the deceased driver, the crash has now turned into a devastating tragedy.

Multiple Patients Treated

Emergency workers also treated several injured people at the scene.

According to the emergency report, about five patients received medical care before ambulances transported them to various hospitals in Durban.

The patients had suffered different injuries.

At this stage, officials have not released their names or detailed conditions. However, the crash clearly required a coordinated response from paramedics, firefighters and police.

In serious highway crashes, emergency workers must act quickly. They assess injuries, stabilise patients and move them away from danger.

They also need to protect themselves and other road users while working on an active road.

Crash Scene Stretched Across Highway

The crash scene stretched across all lanes of the N2 northbound.

That created a major safety risk for motorists approaching the area. It also made the emergency response more complex.

Multiple vehicle crashes often leave debris scattered across the road. Damaged vehicles can block lanes, while injured passengers may need urgent medical attention.

Because the crash happened at night, visibility may also have made the situation harder for approaching drivers and emergency crews.

Authorities have not confirmed the full cause of the collision.

Therefore, it remains important not to speculate about speed, driver behaviour or road conditions until investigators complete their work.

SAPS to Investigate Cause

Police attended the scene and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators will likely look at several factors. These may include the position of the vehicles, witness statements, road conditions and possible mechanical issues.

They may also examine whether any traffic violations contributed to the collision. However, no official finding has been released yet.

For now, the confirmed facts are that three vehicles crashed, one driver died, and several people were taken to the hospital. The investigation will help determine what happened before impact.

Road Safety Concerns Return

The fatal crash once again highlights the danger of serious accidents on South Africa’s major highways.

The N2 is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s busiest routes. It carries private vehicles, taxis, trucks and long-distance traffic every day.

Because of that, crashes on this road can become severe very quickly.

Even one mistake can lead to a chain reaction, especially when several vehicles travel at highway speed. Motorists are urged to remain alert, keep safe following distances and adjust their driving to road and traffic conditions.

Emergency Teams Praised

The response from paramedics, firefighters and police played a crucial role in managing the scene.

ALS Paramedics treated the injured and transported patients to the hospital. Meanwhile, the eThekwini Fire Department assisted with the trapped driver.

SAPS officers also attended the crash scene and began the investigation process. Their work helped bring order to a scene described as chaotic and severe.

Emergency responders often face high-pressure moments during night crashes. They must make quick decisions while dealing with trauma, damaged vehicles and moving traffic.

Families Await Answers

The families of those involved will now wait for updates from hospitals and investigators.

For the injured, the focus will be on recovery. For the family of the deceased driver, the pain of losing a loved one will be difficult to process.

As police continue their investigation, the Nandi multiple vehicle crash stands as another heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous South African roads can be.

Authorities are expected to release further details once they establish what led to the collision.
