A horrific collision on the N1 claimed the lives of four people early Friday morning, 3 July, after a passenger vehicle slammed into a heavy truck.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 5:39 AM, involved a VW Polo and a Scania truck. The crash took place in the northbound lane between the Sasol Garage and the Zebediela Weighbridge. According to authorities, three men and one woman occupying the VW Polo suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Mashudu Mabata, confirmed the fatalities and indicated that driver exhaustion is currently the suspected cause.
“Preliminary information suggests that driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash. However, the exact cause is still under investigation,” Mabata stated.
Mabata extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and commended the swift response of emergency services, traffic officers, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and forensic pathology teams.
While the N1 remains open to traffic, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution. Authorities have issued a strong appeal to long-distance drivers to ensure they are well-rested and take routine breaks to prevent similar tragedies.
