SANDF Announces Opening of 2025 MSDS Applications

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has initiated the application process for its Military Skills Development System (MSDS) for the year 2025, providing an opportunity for young South Africans to serve in the military.

Applications for the program will be accepted until March 15, 2024, and successful candidates will commence their service at the beginning of 2025.

Under the MSD System, approximately 2,000 volunteers will join either the SA Air Force (SAAF), SA Army, SA Military Health Service (SAMHS), or SA Navy (SAN) for a two-year period.

This period involves basic military training followed by specialized training according to the chosen service, culminating in deployment to various divisions, units, or bases.

Upon completion of the 24-month MSD period, a select number of volunteers may receive short-term contracts for full-time service (typically ten years), while the remaining individuals are expected to utilize their acquired military skills within the Reserve Force.

Eligible candidates must be South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 22 (with an allowance for graduates up to 26), possess a Grade 12 qualification or its equivalent, have no history of serious criminal offenses, bear no visible tattoos, and meet the medical fitness standards set by the SANDF.

Stringent requirements apply to the South African Air Force, particularly for pilot training and various engineering positions. Additionally, support roles within the SA Air Force encompass a range of specialties such as communications, firefighting, military police, and more.

The SA Army offers diverse career paths including infantry, artillery, intelligence, logistics, and engineering, among others.

Applicants are advised that the SANDF does not operate an online application system.

Due to budget constraints, the Military Skills Development intake occurs biennially, as opposed to annually.

The most recent intake of MSDS candidates, comprising over 2,000 individuals, is currently undergoing training at SANDF facilities.
