The main purpose of this learnership programme is to hire competent and qualified individuals who can complete a basic course for pharmacy assistants. This will enable them to become a pharmacy assistant. Dispensary Support learners are expected to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the major topics that define the pharmaceutical industry, as well as the principles that come to define these topics. This does not have the same effect as dispensing.

Furthermore, the Dispensary Support Learner will be employed under a fixed-term contract with the option of becoming a permanent employee once they have been accepted as a basic pharmacist assistant by the South African Pharmacy Council. During your tenure as a Pharmacy Assistant in the Basic Learner category, you will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

  • The sale of Schedule 1 medications or controlled substances is prohibited
  • Prepare scheduled substances and non-sterile medicines by manipulating, compounding, and prepping
  • Help with the unpacking and merchandising of stock as well as cleaning the shelves of OTC and dispensaries
  • Assist the Dispensary Manager with other tasks
  • As a member of the SAPC, it is your responsibility to interpret the script accurately and to maintain a professional and responsible demeanor in order to comply with the SAPC’s legal requirements
  • Verify that all medications are accurate and are duly signed by a pharmacist before they are administered
  • Keep packing shelves clean and orderly and monitor expiration dates of Schedule 5 to a medication
  • Communicate with patients about script tracking reports
  • Provide assistance in the handling of patient service calls and the scripting of call centers
  • In order to promote health, it is imperative to share information with the public
  • Aid in the authorization of HIV/AIDS, chronic illnesses, and oncology medications
  • Stock levels and errors should be reported as soon as possible
  • Receive dispensary stock according to company SOP

Who should apply for this learnership?

It is a requirement that you hold at least a Grade 12 / matric, or a Senior Certificate with Physical Science and/or Life Science, and Mathematics (HG) with a minimum average of 50%
