Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet specific criteria to be eligible for the bursary:
- South African citizenship with a valid ID number.
- Age under 30 years.
- Strong academic performance and a genuine interest in education.
- Acceptance into an approved Bachelors of Education (BEd) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PCGE) program, specializing in priority areas.
- No criminal record.
Ineligible Applicants Include Those Who:
- Have a criminal record.
- Are over 30 years old.
- Are employees of a Higher Education Institution, or their spouses, children, or dependents.
- Already possess a teaching qualification.
Applicants must provide honest information during the application process, as failure to disclose relevant details may result in consequences.

Requirements:
While meeting the age and citizenship criteria is essential, applicants must fulfill additional requirements based on their stage of study:
- First-time university students: Must have passed matric with university exemption or equivalent. Additionally, they must have obtained a level 4 or higher in the subjects they intend to teach.
- Current university students: Must maintain an average of 55% or higher across all modules studied.
- PCGE students: Must have completed a recognized qualification to be admitted for PCGE, specializing in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7 – 12).
Bursary Conditions:
- The bursary requires annual re-application and does not automatically carry over to the following year.
- Recipients are obligated to teach for each year covered by the bursary.
Application Timeline:
For the 2024 academic year, applications are set to open provisionally on 1 October 2021. First-time applicants’ deadline is provisionally set for 28 February 2024, while returning bursars’ deadline is provisionally set for 29 November 2021.

- Only online applications via the e-Gov website are accepted.
- Applicants must register with personal information, accept terms and conditions, and proceed with the 2024 application.
