Transnet, a leading employer in the transport and logistics sector, is seeking a Marine Shorehand to join their team in Ngqura.
As a Marine Shorehand, you will play a crucial role in providing berthing and related services to the maritime industry.
Responsibilities:
– Berthing Services: Assist with vessel docking and undocking, handle mooring ropes and wires, and work in dangerous conditions on buoys or launches.
– Water Supply: Identify and operate equipment, connect and disconnect water pipes, and assist with maintenance.
– Ship Repair Facility: Assist with building blocks in dry-docks and slipway facilities, and splice ropes and wires.
– Pollution Control: Deploy pollution equipment, undertake clean-up duties, and assist with debris removal.
– Housekeeping: Clean berthing facilities, vehicles, and surrounding areas, and prepare craft for functions.
Requirements:
– Grade 10 qualification
– Pass a rope test as part of the recruitment process
– Physically capable of performing all duties
– Ability to work in a multi-skilled, multifunctional environment
– Service-oriented with a focus on delivering excellent results
– Literacy level sufficient to undergo training and follow written instructions
– Willingness to work shifts and extended hours as required
– Ability to undergo training programs in all aspects of duties
Knowledge:
– Basic seamanship, including knots and rope and wire splicing
– Equipment used in the supply of fresh water to vessels, including maintenance and storage
– Equipment used in pollution prevention and spillage
